Type Specimen | August 2016
Juried Student Exhibition 2016
Robust is a geometric alphabet created within a grid module. This opportunity to study letterforms allowed me to learn about the relationships between each letter. In the beginning, I sketched thirty ideas for different typeface designs focusing on the letters H, O, M, R, and A. I chose this idea because I wanted to create a fun and puzzle-like typeface where a variety of pieces made up each letter. The angular shapes remind me of older green-screen video games or could be the name and number on athletic jerseys, but I chose to showcase the typeface in an unexpected, fashionable way.
This work was chosen to be shown in WVU’s Art & Design annual Juried Student Exhibition where artists across all departments (i.e. painting, ceramics, graphic design, printmaking, sculpture) submit artwork from the past year and thirty pieces are chosen in a student exhibition.
